Rock For Reading leverages the power of ROCK to inspire literacy - motivating and empowering people to enrich their lives through reading.

"Creating a Nation of Readers"

Creating a Nation of Readers was launched in April of 2007 through the collaboration of Weigl Publishers Inc. of New York and Rock for Reading and Book Worm Angels of Chicago. The program seeks to combat rising youth illiteracy rates in the United States through the recruitment of book donations from publishers and distribution of donated books to literacy organizations. Publishers who have books to donate should contact Linda Weigl at linda@weigl.com. Organizations requiring books may make application at the Rock for Reading website, www. rockforreading.org. Creating a Nation of Readers is committed to getting books to those children who most need them and to inspiring one child at a time, one book at a time to discover the wonderful world of reading.

BOOK GRANT APPLICATION

Rock For Reading, in conjunction with Weigl Publishers, Inc. and Book Worm Angels, has been awarding book grants since 2007. Grants are awarded to groups that support our mission to fight the rising tide of illiteracy and renew interest in reading. Rock For Reading targets organizations that focus on functional-literacy programs as well as those that encourage a culture of reading. Rock For Reading supports stand along reading and literacy programs as well as public, school and in-class libraries whose objectives include:

  • Gaining the support of the administration, librarians, classroom teachers, parents and community leaders.

  • Purchasing engaging and age-appropriate books.

  • Having books available and presented in a way that encourages use of school libraries, in-class libraries and reading and literacy programs.

  • Developing goals regarding the number of books children read.

  • Developing a means to objectively track improvement.

Proposal Deadlines

Rock For Reading does not have an excessive book inventory. We work through many different publishers throughout the United States and fulfill requests as they come in.  As a result, Rock For Reading does not have fixed grant cycles. Book grants are generally awarded four times a year and proposals are considered on a first come, first serve basis. Book grants are typically disbursed during the subsequent quarter depending on availability and logistical considerations.  Our distribution partner, Book Worm Angels, fulfills all book requests.  Please note:  Shipping costs, although minimal, are not generally included.

Range of Grants

Minimum book grant: 250 books; No maximum

Reporting

Rock for Reading requires that you submit a final end-of-year report by December 15th. Please include in it a short narrative describing the program's progress, accomplishments and challenges.
